Deck or Engineer?

There are two main departments in which you can train – deck or engineering.

Deck Officers handle
  • the navigation, communications, cargo and overall management of the ship and the people on board.
Engineering Officers handle
  • the operation and maintenance of the engines and all the mechanical and electrical/equipment throughout the ship.
The training for Deck and Engineer officers follow a similar pattern of college / university based and shipboard training. The actual number and duration of these “phases” as they are called differs depending on whether you train as a Deck or Engineer officer.

The foundation degree/Scottish professional diploma sits within a 3 year training programme that will qualify you as a Junior Officer, giving you Officer Of the Watch (OOW) certification, the first stage of your professional seafaring qualifications.

What do I need for the Merchant Navy foundation degree/Scottish professional diploma course?
Individual shipping companies or training organisations will sponsor you to do the course. They may decide which college/university you attend and you will be placed on their ships for the sea based part of the course. Your course fees and a salary or training allowance will be paid by your sponsoring company. Click here for a list of sponsoring companies. Typical entry requirements are given below. They may vary slightly according to individual sponsoring companies.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

up from “A” level passes.

> Grade B pass = 100 points
> Grade C pass = 80 points

If you have any doubt about your ability to pass the statutory health and/or eyesight requirements you may find it worthwhile to take the appropriate examination before applying.
